Lecture Bottle Safety
Small cylinders, often referred to as Lecture Bottles, have been used in schools, universities and laboratories since the 1930’s, supplying users with small scale gas requirements for experiments.
General Guidelines
- Bottles shall be labeled according to DOT / OSHA Guidelines
- Bottles shall be stored upright, in protective containers
- Bottles shall be stored in a cool dry area that prevents contact with extreme temperatures (hot/cold)
- Bottles shall be stored in a manner that prevents them from coming in contact with oil, grease or other hydrocarbon-based materials which may react with cylinder contents
Valves and Regulation Equipment
- Never attempt to open a damaged valve
- Do not handle bottle by the valve or valve handwheel
- Use tools designed for lecture bottle small size
Bottle valves can be damaged by overtightening - Never use adapters on regulators, incompatible contamination of the gas(es) may occur
- Inspect the bottle prior to use. Never use bottles or equipment that is damaged or corroded
- Check for leaks at all connections before use
Storage Guidelines
- Segregate incompatible gases such as flammable, oxidizing and corrosive
- Inhalation Hazards should be stored in a fume hood or ventilated gas cabinet
- Store bottles in dedicated areas, do not comingle with other chemicals in storage
- Regulation equipment should be removed during storage
- Always dispose of lecture bottles no longer required
- Lecture Bottles are owned, contact your local hazardous material or environmental health and safety provider for compliant disposal. Disposal fees vary depending on the bottle contents.
